The American Meteorological Society is pleased to invite applications for the Richard Grotjahn Research Fellowship in Extremes (RGRFE), providing a research fellowship to a graduate student pursuing a degree in meteorology, atmospheric, or related sciences. Specifically, the 8- to 10-week fellowship will support a graduate student in conducting research in the general area of extremes-related research under the guidance of a mentor.

Goal

The intent of the RGRFE is to facilitate interaction between the student and a mentor with whom the student might not otherwise collaborate. “Extremes-related” research topics can include: theoretical, diagnostic, and/or modeling studies of extreme: weather, climate, or related sciences, and/or development of techniques (e.g. statistical techniques, forecasting techniques). The research topic could be pedagogical (learning new techniques from the mentor, especially if applicable to the student’s degree project), ongoing (participating in an existing project with the mentor), or original (initiating a new line of research with the mentor). The goal is to build expertise in research related to extreme events.

Stipend

The Fellowship carries a $10,000 stipend that the recipient can use for travel, living expenses, and other costs associated with the research.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must be currently enrolled and have successfully completed at least one year of an accredited master’s or doctoral program, in North America, at the time of application.
  • Applicants must be in a program that leads to a graduate degree in meteorology, atmospheric, or related sciences.
  • Applicants must identify a mentor to supervise the extremes-related research project.
  • Applicants should be willing to present the results of their research project in a written form to be kept on file at the AMS and made accessible to future applicants for this fellowship. This report is due no later than 11 months after receiving the award. Applicants are encouraged to report on their research project at a scientific conference or workshop.
