Established in 1948, the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (ASEEES) – a nonprofit, non-political, scholarly society – is the leading international organization dedicated to the advancement of knowledge about Central Asia, the Caucasus, Russia, and Eastern Europe in regional and global contexts.

General Eligibility

  • Applicant may be a graduate student of any citizenship, in any discipline currently enrolled in a PhD program in the United States
  • Applicant must have successfully achieved PhD candidacy (ABD status) by the start of the proposed research travel
  • Applicant must have requisite language proficiency to conduct the proposed research
  • Applicant must be a student member of ASEEES at the time of application

ASEEES Dissertation Research Grant Program

Thanks to the generosity of donors and members, the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies is offering research grants with a stipend of maximum $6,000, for the purposes of conducting doctoral dissertation research in Eastern Europe and Eurasia in any aspect of Slavic, East European, and Eurasian studies in any discipline. Students may only receive ONE ASEEES Dissertation Research Grant over the course of their graduate studies.

Applicant must plan to conduct research in one or more of countries within the region covered by ASEEES, including: Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Georgia, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Kyrgyz Republic, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekista.

ASEEES Summer Dissertation Writing Grant Program

Thanks to the generosity of donors and members, the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies is offering a limited number of grants, with a maximum stipend of $6,000, for the purposes of summer dissertation writing on any aspect of Slavic, East European, and Eurasian studies in any discipline.

The summer dissertation writing grant program is directed at PhD students at US universities who do not qualify for the ASEEES Dissertation Research Grant because they do not intend to conduct significant research in the region as part of their dissertation research. Therefore, current or past recipients of the ASEEES Dissertation Research Grants are not eligible. Students may only receive ONE Summer Dissertation Writing Grant over the course of their graduate studies.

These awards may be held concurrently with other partial funding sources or part-time work, but the recipients should use the summer grant period to focus on writing and not accept other major responsibilities, such as full-time work.

Cohen-Tucker Dissertation Fellowship Program

The Cohen-Tucker Dissertation Research Fellowships provide a maximum stipend of $28,000 for doctoral students at US universities, regardless of citizenship, to conduct dissertation research in Russian/Soviet historical studies. The program is open to students in any discipline whose dissertation topics are within 19th-early 21st century Russian/Soviet historical studies. Most of the research should be conducted in Eastern Europe and/or Eurasia but the fellowship can be used to conduct research for a briefer period in secondary site(s) such as the U.S.

The Cohen-Tucker Dissertation Completion Fellowships provide a maximum stipend of $28,000 for doctoral students at US universities, regardless of citizenship, to complete their dissertation in Russian/Soviet historical studies. The program is open to students in any discipline whose dissertation topics are within 19th-early 21st century Russian/Soviet historical studies.

ASEEES Next Generation Dissertation Research Fellowship Program

The ASEEES Next Generation Dissertation Research Fellowship Program provides a maximum stipend of $28,000 for doctoral students at US universities, regardless of citizenship, to conduct dissertation research in Slavic, Eastern European, and Eurasian Studies. The program is open to students in any discipline whose dissertation topics are within Slavic, Eastern European, and Eurasian Studies.

Most of the proposed research should be conducted in Eastern Europe and/or Eurasia but the fellowship can be used to conduct research for a briefer period in secondary site(s) such as the U.S.; in cases of equally qualified applications, some preference may be given to research entirely in the region
