These fellowships are designed to increase the participation of scholars from underrepresented backgrounds and others in the field of African American history prior to 1900. The fellowships promote research in residence in the collections of the Library Company and enhance the production of scholarly work in African American history of the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. Fellows are expected to conduct the majority of their research in the Library Company’s collections but may also use the collections of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. Applicants may be citizens of any country, and they must hold a Ph.D. by the start of the fellowship. The stipend is $50,000 for the academic year.
