GRADUCon 2021 - U.S. Job Search for International Students/Postdocs

ABOUT

As an international student, the process of navigating the job search and avoiding potential pitfalls within the American job market can be a disconcerting concept for many. Attend this panel if you’re an international student who would like to hear from someone who has been in your shoes, and to take away valuable advice on how you can be successful in a job search process that is different from what you may be used to in your home country. The panel will comprise of alumni from different countries who will share their perspectives on how they have navigated the job search process, shown success in negotiating their job offers, and the types of realities international students would have to be prepared for in entering the U.S. job market.

PANELISTS

Daniela Matinho, Strategic Analyst, IRI (MS, Analytics, University of Chicago, 2020)

Daniela Matinho currently works as an analyst at IRI and graduated from UChicago in 2020 with a Master’s in Analytics. Before moving to Chicago, she worked as a digital marketing expert mostly in Europe and Asia Pacific. Daniela loves talking about how she navigated from a social sciences background to the STEM world, and how the combination of them has helped her to succeed at work and school.

Luis Flosi, Data Scientist, Facebook (MS, Analytics, University of Chicago, 2021)

An Economics graduate and Master in Data Science, Luis Flosi has 2 years experience in financial consulting and 1 year experience in analytics for gaming. He will be starting as a Data Scientist at Facebook this April after a successful internship. Luis is originally from Brazil and came to the United States as an F-1 student for both degrees, successfully landing a job post completion. He loves working with technology and entertainment.

Qian Chen, Senior Data Scientist, Anthem (MS, Statistics, University of Chicago, 2016)

Qian joined Anthem data science team in May 2019. At Anthem, he leverages his machine learning and big data skills to build several fraud detection models to capture overpayment issues from providers. Prior to Anthem, Qian worked as a data scientist at Allstate’s Quantitative Research & Analytics team. He was a key player to build 1st medical bill automation system to accelerate the claim process. Outside of work, Qian loves hiking and reading history.

Luis Simon, Economist, Goldman Sachs (PhD, Economics, University of Chicago, 2020)

Luis Simon is currently an economist at Goldman Sachs Asset Management, working in the emerging market debt team. Luis graduated from UChicago in 2020 with a PhD in Economics. During the PhD, Luis’s research focused on the intersection between macroeconomics and finance. Before the PhD, Luis worked at the Central Bank of Mexico as an economist and got an MA and a BA, both in economics and both at ITAM in Mexico.

MODERATOR

Nick Seamons, Assistant Dean of Students and Director of the Office of International Affairs, University of Chicago (MA, Communications, Northwestern University, 2015)

Nick joined the Office of International Affairs as Director in November 2017. He previously served the Northwestern University community as Associate Director of the International Office. In his free time, Nick likes to travel internationally, practice his French speaking skills, and get creative in the kitchen.
