We are excited to welcome you to the University of Chicago! To ensure a smooth matriculation process we encourage our incoming graduate students to review the information below. Note this list is not exhaustive and all incoming graduate students should confirm with their program additional requirements and deadlines.

University of Chicago UCID

Your UCID is an 8-digit unique identifier for the University of Chicago. All admitted applicants receive a UCID. It is communicated either via email from your admitting graduate division or school or is available in your application portal.

If you have had any prior affiliation with the University of Chicago your UCID will stay the same. Previous affiliations include previous or multiple current cycle applications, attending the Lab Schools or Summer Session program, or were employed at the University.

If you cannot locate your UCID and have a previous affiliation with the University of Chicago, you can complete the Missing UCID Form and a member of our team will reach out for more information.

Create your CNetID

Review the IT Services (ITS) checklist and create your CNetID as soon as you accept your offer of admission.

Learn more about 2 Factor Authentication (2FA).

All enrolling students must claim their University of Chicago network username called a CNetID. Your CNetID will remain with you throughout your affiliation with the University and cannot be changed. Whatever you choose will be the basis of your UChicago email address (e.g. if your CNetID is “example,” example@uchicago.edu is your corresponding email address).

Creating your CNet will give you access to the following UChicago resources

  • UChicago Email Address (UChicago Email Overview)
  • my.UChicago.edu account
  • Office of International Affairs (OIA) Portal to request your I-20 or DS-2019 (international students)

Configure your UChicago Outlook Email on your devices

Review the IT Services (ITS) resources for configuring Outlook on your devices.

Beginning in summer, all communication from University offices, including the Registrar, Bursar, UChicago Student Wellness, etc. will only go to your UChicago email address. You are responsible for reading all messages sent to your UChicago email address.

We strongly recommend using Outlook to manage messages. Email forwarding can be set up (ITS Instructions), but it is not guaranteed that all messages will be delivered.

Access Resources in Canvas

Log into Canvas

Beginning in May all incoming graduate students who have created their CNetID will receive an invitation to the UChicagoGRAD New Student Resources Canvas Course. Invites will be sent to UChicago email addresses only.

What is Canvas? Canvas is the university’s official cloud-based learning management system (LMS) utilized for organizing course materials, enabling communication, grading, and accessing digital learning tools.

The UChicagoGRAD course will introduce you to important offices and resources available to grad students across the University, with features like:

  • New graduate student checklist
  • Worksheets to assist with budgeting and accommodation search
  • Information on student wellness resources
  • Calendar of summer events on-campus and throughout the City of Chicago

Some divisions, schools, or individual programs host Canvas courses for specific pre-matriculation and orientation material related to your program. All courses can be accessed from the Dashboard or Courses from the left-side navigation.
