Tax filing software for students:
- Domestic students and residents for tax purposes in Illinois can file electronically at no cost through one of the IRS’ Free File partners. (These partners may have income limits to qualify for free returns.) Students can also mail a physical tax return directly to the IRS, or use a paid tax software to complete their return electronically.
- Nonresidents for tax purposes can use Sprintax tax software to prepare and file their federal returns. Access is provided via a code from the Office of International Affairs. Questions that arise will preparing the return can be directed to Sprintax live chat 24/7.
Resources for tax filing assistance:
- The Illinois CPA (certified public accountant) Society maintains a database where individuals can find a CPA to help prepare their tax return (CPAs in database are members of the directory and not endorsed by the Illinois CPA Society)
- VITA (volunteer income tax assistance) Services help prepare a basic income tax returns for individuals with an adjusted gross income of less than $60,000, individuals with disabilities, or a limited knowledge of English
