The University of Chicago community is enriched through students, scholars, and staff with diverse backgrounds and perspectives. Nearly one-fifth of UChicago's student population is international, hailing from more than 100 countries across the globe. In addition to the resources listed elsewhere regarding student life, a number of services are specifically designed for international students and their families. If you have questions specific to the application process, please see our Apply page and our International Application FAQs.
The Office of International Affairs (OIA) supports the unique needs of our international students, scholars, employees, and their families and provides useful information for applicants. Their prospective students page also offers a directory of current students, with home country and current academic program, who would be happy to answer any questions you may have as an international student considering UChicago.
They also maintain a wealth of information on daily life and other practical matters, and host coffee hours, workshops, and quarterly socials for the entire international community at UChicago.
Specific resources are also offered for spouses and partners of international students, including the twice-weekly English Corner, International Spouses and Partners Group, and access to information on other campus services such as the Family Resource Center.
English Language Institute
The English Language Institute (ELI) provides a range of programming for international students and postdocs focusing on English for academic and professional purposes. The ELI offers a 3-week intensive Academic English Pre-Matriculation Program (AEPP) in the summer and a variety of courses throughout the academic year to strengthen pronunciation, spontaneous speaking and academic writing.
