The University of Chicago is located in the neighborhood of Hyde Park, seven miles south of the city center (also known as the Loop). Hyde Park is easily accessible from downtown by all major forms of transportation. If possible, we suggest taking public transportation because parking on campus can be difficult. If you must drive, there are two pay-to-park structures located within a ten minute walk of our office; allow a minimum of 30 minutes extra time if you plan to seek on-street parking. Please use the resources below for detailed travel instructions and information.
The Graduate Admissions Office is located at 970 E. 58th Street, on the third floor of the University Bookstore building, on the west side of Ellis Avenue.
Flying to Chicago
Chicago is home to two international airports. The University of Chicago campus is easily accessed from either airport.
Midway International Airport is approximately eight miles west of the University of Chicago campus. Midway is easily accessible from our campus by public transportation, car, shuttle, and taxi. The CTA's #55 bus runs directly between Midway and Hyde Park, and the Orange Line "El" train connects the airport to downtown.
O’Hare International Airport is approximately 30 miles northwest and is also accessible from our campus by public transportation, shuttle, car, and taxi. From O'Hare, the Blue Line "El" train connects to downtown.
There is limited street parking available on and around campus. Please allow for ample time to find a parking spot. On-campus street parking is primarily metered, with a two-hour limit. However, there are multiple parking garages on campus (see map). The preferred visitors’ garage is located at 55th Street & Ellis Avenue, three blocks north of our office. Parking in the garage ranges from $4 for an hour, to $20 for 4+ hours; however, parking is a flat $4 after 4:00 p.m. and on weekends.
The quickest way to campus from downtown is to catch the Metra Electric commuter train at the Millennium Park/Randolph, Van Buren, or Roosevelt stations (NOT the Metra Line at Union Station). Take the train to the 57th Street/ University of Chicago stop, which is about six blocks east of the center of campus. See the Metra website for more information. Note that Metra runs on very strict time schedules.
The southbound #6 Jackson Park Express bus (toward 79th/South Shore) runs along State Street and has multiple stops between Lake Street and Congress Parkway. From downtown, this route continues south on Lake Shore Drive and into the Hyde Park area. Take this bus to 57th Street and Stony Island Avenue, and then walk west for about seven blocks to the center of campus. Alternatively, you can exit the #6 bus at 55th Street, and transfer to the westbound #55 Garfield bus to Ellis Avenue. See the CTA website for more information. Buses run more frequently than does Metra Electric.

Walk to the taxi stand in front of the University of Chicago Medical Center at the corner of Maryland Avenue and East 58th Street.
Taxi apps, such as Curb, work as well, and are usually faster than calling a cab. However, you can call a cab from one of the main Chicago cab companies: Yellow Cab or Checker Cab. They can both be reached by dialing 312.829.4222. Plan to call at least an hour before your pick-up time.
