Japanese Consulate Monbukagakusho (MEXT) Scholarships for Graduate Research

Monbukagakusho (MEXT), the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology offers four different scholarships for non-Japanese nationals wishing to study in Japan. Only U.S. citizens living within the following states can apply for a MEXT Scholarship at this Consulate: IL, IN, IA, KS, MN, MO, NE, ND, SD, WI.

Research Scholarship

This scholarship offers college graduates and graduate students the opportunity to study and research a specific field to obtain a masters or doctorate degree at a Japanese university. Applicants should apply for the field of study they majored in at university or its related field(s). Applicants should intend to enroll in and receive their degree from a Japanese university.

MEXT will provide roundtrip airfare to Japan, full tuition and any university entrance fees, along with a monthly stipend: ¥143,000 (non-regular/preparatory education students); ¥144,000 (master’s students); ¥145,000 (doctoral program students). An additional ¥2,000 – ¥3,000 monthly stipend may be provided to those students doing field research in designated regions.

Born on or after April 2, 1992
Have a bachelor’s degree before April or September 2027
