Please Note

We have made the decision to cancel all in-person admissions programs and interactions out of concern for the health and wellness of everyone in our campus community and all of our guests. While the Office of Graduate Admissions will be closed to the public on campus, our staff will be readily available to help you via email or phone during these challenging times. We also are offering the opportunity to schedule a one-on-one Zoom meeting with a member of the admissions team – click here to schedule an appointment. You do not need a Zoom account to join a meeting.

We encourage you to check this page frequently for updates if you are planning to visit. New information will be posted here as it becomes available. As of now, this closure extends through April 15, but this could change at any time.

The University of Chicago welcomes prospective graduate students and visitors to our campus. On this site you will find information to help you plan your trip to Chicago and the University. You will find maps of the area, links to nearby accommodations, and information on joining a Graduate Admissions tour of campus. A few of our professional schools offer special visit opportunities for students throughout the year, and we encourage you to explore those as well, particularly if your plans include the Booth School of Business, the Law School, the Harris School of Public Policy, or the School of Social Service Administration. Regardless of your area of interest, you are welcome to attend one of our tours.

For more information, please contact Graduate Admissions via email at gradadmissions@uchicago.edu or by phone at 773.702.3760.

Office Closures

We have made the decision to cancel all in-person admissions programs and interactions out of concern for the health and wellness of everyone in our campus community and all of our guests. While the Office of Graduate Admissions will be closed to the public on campus, our staff will be readily available to help you via email or phone during these challenging times. We also are offering the opportunity to schedule a one-on-one Zoom meeting with a member of the admissions team – click here to schedule an appointment. You do not need a Zoom account to join a meeting.

The University has encouraged schools, divisions, and departments to limit on-campus visitors to those who are essential for research and educational purposes, and to work remotely where feasible.

We encourage you to check this page frequently for updates if you are planning to visit. New information will be posted here as it becomes available. As of now, this closure extends through April 15, but this could change at any time.

Please note that the Graduate Admissions Office will also be closed on the following dates:

  • Monday, May 25 (Memorial Day)
  • Friday, June 12 our office will be open, but we will not offer an afternoon tour. Because of the University’s Convocation, we recommend that prospective students do not plan to visit campus on June 12 or 13.
  • Friday, July 3 (in observance of Independence Day)
  • Monday, September 7 (Labor Day)

If you are a prospective or admitted graduate student and would like to join a tour of campus, current graduate students lead tours Monday through Friday. Tours leave promptly from our office, and last approximately one hour. Walk-ins are welcome, but we ask that you please register in advance. Upon registration, you will receive a confirmation, including links to directions and parking information. Because parking near campus can be extremely difficult, we encourage you to allow at least 30 minutes to find parking, or to use public transit if possible. If you have additional questions or need special accommodation, please feel free to contact us at gradadmissions@uchicago.edu or by phone at 773.702.3760.

Group Tours

Interested in bringing a group? Please fill out our group tour request form at least three weeks prior to your planned visit. We will then be in touch to discuss the arrangements for your visit. Please note that requests submitted without ample time for planning may not be possible. We also cannot coordinate or finance any costs related to your trip.

If you are interested in undergraduate studies at the University of Chicago, information on College Admissions tours can be found here.

Graduate Tour Schedule

Monday through Friday at 10:30 a.m.
Monday and Friday only at 2:30 p.m.
Walk-ins are welcome, but we ask that you please register in advance.

Individuals with disabilities or special needs who believe they may need assistance should contact our office at 773.702.3760 to request an accommodation at least one week prior to their visit.

Professional School Visits

Several of our professional schools also offer regular campus open houses or visit days specific to their programs:

Other Programs

Other individual programs may have open houses over the course of the school year. Please contact your program of interest to inquire about visit options. If you need help locating contact information for a specific program or department, please email the Office of Graduate Admissions at gradadmissions@uchicago.edu.

Driving Directions

The fastest way to get to campus from downtown Chicago is usually by Lake Shore Drive.

From Lake Shore Drive, exit at 57th Drive (the Museum of Science and Industry). Go west and curve around the museum. Take the fourth right onto the Midway Plaisance and go west to the campus.

Another option is the Dan Ryan Expressway (I-94).

From the Dan Ryan Expressway, exit at Garfield Blvd. (55th St.) and drive east, following the signs for 55th Street through Washington Park. Once you cross over Cottage Grove Avenue, the campus is on your right.

Parking

Parking on campus can be difficult. Please allow adequate travel time from the recommended parking lots to the Graduate Admissions Office.

Campus North Parking Lot: This parking lot is the most convenient and is located at 55th Street and Ellis Avenue, less than half a mile from our office. Information on parking rates can be found here.

Community Parking Lot: There is a free parking lot located at 60th Street and Stony Island Avenue. Please note that this parking lot is located approximately 1 mile from campus (a 20-minute walk). This lot is also the official lot for parking large buses.

Street parking: Street parking is free around campus, but finding an available spot can be tricky. We recommend that you instead park in one of the university’s parking lots or make use of one of the public transportation options listed below.

Public Transit

Bus

There are several CTA buses that serve the University of Chicago campus. The bus fare is $2.25.

#6 Jackson Park Express: Take the #6 bus southbound towards 79th/South Shore, alighting at S Hyde Park and 55th Street. Cross 55th street to take the #55 bus towards Midway Orange Line, exiting at 55th Street and Ellis. Turn left onto South Ellis Avenue; our building is located at the intersection of S Ellis Avenue and 58th Street.

#2 Hyde Park Express: This bus travels directly from Navy Pier to Hyde Park. However, it operates only in the mornings (southbound from 6:55 am to 9:20 am) and evenings (northbound from 3:40 pm to 6:05 pm). Take the southbound bus towards Cottage Grove/60th and alight at 60th Street and Ellis. Head northbound on South Ellis Avenue, crossing the Midway Plaisance before reaching our office at the corner of 58th Street and Ellis, on your left-hand side.

#4 Cottage Grove: Take the #4 bus southbound towards 115th Street, alighting at Cottage Grove and 58th Street. Turn left onto East 58th Street before reaching our office at the corner of 58th Street and Ellis, on your left-hand side.

Elevated Train

The CTA’s Green and Red Lines run close to campus. When traveling on either line, exit at the Garfield stop. When you exit the train station, cross the street to take the 55 bus towards the Museum of Science and Industry. Exit at 55th Street and Ellis and turn left onto South Ellis Avenue. Our building is located at the intersection of S Ellis Avenue and 58th Street.

A single-ride train ticket costs $2.25.

Metra

The Metra Electric District Line also runs near campus. From downtown, take this line towards Blue Island and alight at the 55th-56th-57th street Metra stop. You can then either walk to our building (about a mile) or take the #55 bus to 55th Street and Ellis. The Metra train fare is $3.75.
