Metropolitan Museum Art History Fellowships

The Metropolitan Museum of Art offers fellowships to scholars in the fields of art history, archaeology, museum education, conservation, and related sciences, as well as scholars in other disciplines, whose dynamic and interdisciplinary projects require close study of objects in The Met collection. Annually, The Met awards over 50 fellowships to scholars from around the world. It is an educational priority to make The Met a laboratory for art and ideas. As a result, we support academic investigations of the Museum’s collection spanning more than 5,000 years from every corner of the world and contribute to broader scholarly discourses.

Met fellowships are awarded to junior scholars, postdoctoral and senior academics, and museum professionals for independent study or research.

Eligibility

• PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers, and senior scholars may be eligible to apply. Junior fellows are those applicants who are currently working on their PhD; senior fellows are those who hold a PhD on the date of application and/or are well-established scholars.
• The Slifka Foundation Interdisciplinary Fellowship and the Polaire Weissman Fund Fellowship are open to candidates who have completed their master’s degree or are in the process of completing their PhD.

Junior fellows receive a stipend of $42,000. Senior fellows receive a stipend of $52,000. Both junior and senior fellows also receive up to an additional $6,000 for travel (maximum of six weeks).
