The university provides resources across campus for students applying to fellowship opportunities. Students frequently reference these resources to ensure they fulfill the requirements of their home program and the funding organization.

Deans of Students

In some cases, a fellowship may affect a student’s annual stipend or require special enrollment status. For other opportunities, the university will apply to the fellowship on behalf of the student. Applicants should consult both the fellowships team and the Dean of Students in their home division or school with questions related to these situations.

Institutional Review Board (IRB)

Applicants whose research includes human subjects may need Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval to apply to research oriented fellowships. The university offers robust resources for navigating institutional review.

The Broader Impacts of Research

Increasingly, federal and private funding agencies are turning their focus and support to researchers and scholars who can communicate both the intellectual merit and broader impact of their work. This emphasis celebrates the scientist, social scientist, or humanist whose work makes a lasting impression on his or her intellectual community and society. Examples of funding agencies that privilege broader impacts include (but are not limited to): The Fulbright US Student Program and the National Science Foundation.

UChicagoGRAD has compiled the following list of opportunities to help students find venues where they can connect with their community, promote training and learning, broaden interest in their research or field, enhance infrastructure for research or education, and disseminate the importance of their work. For direct contact information at some of these organizations, please contact UChicagoGRAD at grad-fellowships@uchicago.edu.
