Title VIII Fellowships provide tuition, fees, and room & board stipends for U.S. graduate students, area specialists, and scholars studying the languages and cultures of Eastern Europe and the countries of the former Soviet Union. Title VIII Fellowships support in-person study, online study, and overseas study in the Workshop’s program in Budapest. Overseas Fellowships include travel and study-abroad fees.

Title VIII Fellowships are awarded on a competitive basis, with priority going to applicants who will further the Title VIII mission to develop and maintain high-quality research and training programs critical to the national security of the United States and to support and sustain American expertise on the countries of Eastern Europe and the independent states of the former Soviet Union.

Eligibility

To be eligible for Title VIII funding, you must:

  • Be studying Russian at level 3 or higher, or any level of an East European or Eurasian language in the IU Language Workshop
  • Be a U.S. citizen
  • Be one of the following:
    • A graduate student enrolled in the spring and fall surrounding your Title VIII summer;
    • A rising graduate student beginning a graduate program in the fall following your Title VIII summer;
    • A post-doctoral student with an appointment that includes the fall following your Title VIII summer;
    • A scholar or researcher employed in Russian, East European, or Eurasian studies.
