Illinois Humanities provides grants to individuals and organizations for various types of community-based projects, including:

Activate History Microgrants

Microgrants support individuals and small organizations that invite the public to experience collections of local and regional history. From archives and texts to stories and photography, we support stewards of history so that they can teach and enlighten their communities and impart the value of archives. This program is designed to be accessible with a quick turnaround; the grant cycle opens once per year and remains open until October 1 or when funds are expended.

Envisioning Justice Grants for Individuals

These project-based grants support individuals such as educators, organizers, artists, and others who use the arts and humanities to work toward a truly just society. Research projects, podcasts, grassroots publications, and public performances are just a few of the impactful initiatives we fund to create understanding about mass incarceration and its impact on communities in Illinois. By supporting those doing this important work, we build more affirming, engaged, and empowered communities. The deadline for application is June 30.
