The American Trust for the British Library (ATBL) Research Fellowship Program (formerly entitled “The ATBL Transatlantic Fellowship Program”) is an integral part of the ATBL’s mission to promote and support the work of the British Library through related events, lectures, and discussion, as well as incremental financial and in-kind gift support for the Library’s collection, preservation, and outreach activities.

The ATBL’s Research Fellowship Program is a short-term, $2,500 USD research stipend that supports research projects that make use of collections in any department in the British Library.

The Program partners with American collections-based institutions that currently have established, competitive short-term research fellowships or stipends on offer. The Program is a “check box,” “add-on” option for applicants to the American short-term research program, ensuring that successful ATBL Research Fellowship Program candidates conduct research in dialogue between an American collection and that of the British Library.

If awarded a short-term research stipend from one of our American partner institutions and if the applicant has also elected to be considered for ATBL Research Fellowship support, then the ATBL will reach out to the applicant and request that they apply.

Deadlines are set by individual libraries.
