EMBO Postdoctoral Fellowships support excellent postdoctoral researchers throughout Europe and the world for a period of up to two years. International mobility is a key requirement. The fellowship includes a salary or stipend, a relocation allowance and support for fellows with children. Awardees can attend an EMBO Laboratory Leadership course and become part of the global network of EMBO Fellows.

EMBO Programmes and activities are about research on the mechanisms of life at all levels, from single molecules to organisms and ecosystems.

Eligibility

  • Applicants must hold a doctorate or equivalent at the start of the fellowship.
  • Applicants who already hold a PhD at the time of application are eligible to apply only if they obtained it during the two years prior to the date the application is submitted. Exceptions may be granted for applicants with official career breaks that have affected their capability to apply during the relevant 2-year eligibility period.
  • Applicants must have at least one first author publication (research paper) accepted in or published in an international peer reviewed journal at the time of application.
  • All applications must involve movement between countries.
  • Applications to go to the country in which the PhD was obtained will not be considered.
  • Projects that are a direct continuation of the PhD work are not eligible.

Mobility

EMBO Postdoctoral Fellowships are intended to promote international exchange. All applications must involve a change of country.

  1. Applications to work in an EMBC Member State
    Applicants, regardless of their nationality or the country in which they obtained their PhD, can apply for an EMBO Postdoctoral Fellowship to work in any EMBC Member State provided there is international mobility.
  2. Applications to work in an EMBC/EMBO global partners
    Applicants who wish to work in an EMBC/EMBO global partners are eligible if they move from, are nationals of and have performed their PhD in
    • an EMBC Member State or
    • an EMBC/EMBO global partners
  3. Applications to work in a Non-EMBC Member State
    Applicants who wish to work in a Non-EMBC Member State must meet all the following requirements:
    • must move from an EMBC Member State,
    • must be nationals of an EMBC Member State
    • must have performed their PhD in one of the EMBC Member States

Deadline

Applications for EMBO Postdoctoral Fellowships are accepted throughout the year and enter one of two evaluation cycles depending on the time of submission.

Spring evaluation: includes all eligible applications submitted by the fourth Friday of January, 14:00 Central European Time (CET). Results for this round will be announced around the mid of June.

Autumn evaluation: includes all eligible applications submitted by the second Friday of July, 14:00 Central European Summer Time (CEST). Results for this round will be announced around the mid of December.
