About the Award
These fellowships, supported by the United States Department of Education, provide opportunities to doctoral candidates to engage in dissertation research abroad in modern foreign languages and area studies. The program is designed to contribute to the development and improvement of the study of modern foreign languages and area studies in the United States. Doctoral candidates can propose 6-12 months of research in non-Western countries on this fellowship. Applicants must have the necessary language skills to carry out research. Multi-country proposals are accepted.

Eligibility
U.S. citizens or permanent residents who have PhD candidacy at time of travel and who wish to do dissertation research in non-Western countries. Students must have achieved a level of language proficiency necessary to conduct the proposed research. Grants are not generally provided for research in countries where the United States has no diplomatic representation or where there is a Department of State travel security warning.

Applications must be completed online through a system called G6.ed.gov.

advising
An information session will be held on Tuesday, November 12, 2024. Applicants are also encouraged to participate in weekly writing workshops for support with preparing the application. Workshops will be held during the month leading up to the deadline. To participate in the workshop, applicants must be prepared to send a draft statements in advance of workshop meetings. Application Components
- Application Narrative not to exceed page limit (10 pages);
- Bibliography: up to 2 pages in addition to the 10 page narrative;
- Curriculum Vita, which should include relevant course work dealing with language and area studies specialization, fellowships and honors received, publications, and other relevant experience;
- Language Reference Form submitted electronically by reviewer;
- Letters of Reference (x 3) submitted electronically by referees (one of which must be from advisor);
- Letters of Affiliation (x 3-5) from contacts and/or institutions in host country;
- All official transcripts;
- Applicants will also need to provide an IRB narrative (if applicable) and the application requires that students list the date of the their last physical examination (needs to be within the last year) and name and phone number of their doctor.
