The Gilder Lehrman Institute provides annual short-term research fellowships in the amount of $3000 each to doctoral candidates, college and university faculty at every rank, and independent scholars working in the field of American history. This year, special attention will be given to topics on colonial America; the history of slavery and abolition; and the Cold War. Preference will be given to applicants in these fields, although projects on all aspects of American history are welcome.

Collections

The Gilder Lehrman Collection contains more than eighty-five thousand items documenting the political, social, and economic history of the United States. These materials range from iconic historical treasures, such as the Declaration of Independence, the US Constitution, and the Emancipation Proclamation, to personal letters that tell the stories of citizen-soldiers and their families. Chronologically, the Collection ranges from 1493 to the end of the twentieth century. The main strengths lie in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, particularly in the study of slavery and abolition.
