The Jump Trading PhD Fellowship looks to push the frontiers of science. They state: “Our day to day work depends on the innovation, curiosity, and ability of the global research community, and this is one way for us to give back to it.”

Fellows will receive a grant to cover one complete academic year of tuition, fees, and a ~$50,000 stipend, subject to university guidelines.

Fellows are invited (but not required) to visit a Jump office, present their research, and connect with their team.

 

Internal Deadline: Wednesday, October 1, 2025 at 5pm

Materials due:

  • Complete application
  • 1 letter of recommendation from current academic advisor

 

 Revision Deadline for Selected Nominees: Friday, October 24, 2025 at 5pm

Materials due:

  • Complete application, after opportunity for revision
  • 1 remaining letter of recommendation (2 total) from a professor in the department or related department who is familiar your research

 

External Deadline: Friday, October 31, 2025

  • UChicagoGRAD submits applications on behalf of nominees

 

Fellowship Tracks

The funder expects to award at least one Fellowship in each of the following six tracks:

  • Chemical, Biological & Biomedical Sciences
    • e.g., chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics, biomedical engineering, pharmacology
  • Mathematics & Statistics
    • e.g., pure and applied mathematics, statistics, probability theory, computational mathematics.
  • Physics
    • e.g., theoretical and experimental physics, astrophysics, optics, quantum science, and materials physics
  • Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning
    • e.g., deep learning, natural language processing, computer vision, reinforcement learning, large language models
  • Computer Science and Electrical Engineering
    • e.g., core computer science fields including algorithms, systems, architecture, programming languages, databases, human-computer interaction, as well as electrical engineering aspects such as circuits, embedded systems, and signal processing
  • Earth Sciences
    • e.g., geology, climatology, oceanography, atmospheric sciences, environmental science, geophysics

Eligibility               

  •  PhD candidates with at least 1 academic year remaining in their program when the Fellowship begins (Fall 2026)
  • Enrolled or appointed at an accredited academic or research institution in the US approved as a nominating institution
  • Strong academic record and research productivity in an area related to one of the 6 fellowship categories
  • Jump employees, contractors/consultants, and relatives are not eligible
