Every summer, the Middlebury Language Schools offer seven and eight week immersion language programs in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German (including German for Singers Program), Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.
Middlebury offers a number of merit-based Fellowships and Scholarships for the summer Languages Schools that may apply to you:
Fellows for Peace
The Fellows for Peace fellowships are awarded to 12 languages and cover tuition, housing, and food for one summer at any level of study. Successful fellowship applications typically have a strong background in peace work or conflict resolution, broadly construed. They have represented a wide range of professions, from NGO work to government service, journalism to law, medicine to the arts, and so on. Applications should have a plan for future peace work and knowledge of the region and relevant issues. The fellowship committee gives more weight to accomplishments and related future projects than it does to academic qualifications alone.
Conflict Transformation Fellowship
The Conflict Transformation Fellowship is partial funding awarded to current graduate students at the Language Schools and other institutions for the Summer Immersion Programs and Graduate Programs at Middlebury Language Schools. Funded by the Kathryn Wasserman Davis Collaborative in Conflict Transformation, this select group of Language Schools students will focus on the ways that conflict transformation (the development of creative solutions to conflict-based systems and situations) manifests in diverse regions, cultures, contexts, and fields around the globe.
KRESS FELLOWSHIPS IN EUROPEAN ART HISTORY OR ART CONSERVATION
Five fellowships are offered for graduate students in European art history or art conservation. Fellowships cover the comprehensive fee (tuition, room, and board) to attend the Middlebury Language Schools in French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, or Spanish. Travel expenses and books are not included.
Portuguese Teachers Fellowship
Recipients of these scholarships will receive funding to cover the comprehensive fee (tuition, on-campus housing and food) for one summer of language study at the Portuguese School. Based on merit and demonstrated financial need, the applicant must currently be a language teacher or a graduate assistant and want to further their language proficiency in Portuguese in order to teach Portuguese in the future. Fellows will receive full funding to attend the Portuguese School in any current level. Fellows have the option to observe classes, develop class plans, create pedagogical sequences, and participate in a class practicum.
Need-Based Financial Aid
Need-based financial aid is awarded in the form of grants. This means that if you qualify, you will attend the Language Schools at a reduced cost. Middlebury is only able to offer partial need-based grants. You will typically be responsible for a significant portion of the cost to attend. You will also be responsible for travel to and from the program, books, and personal expenses. Please note that need-based grant funds are limited and do run out. Aid awards are offered on a “first come, first served” basis. If you need financial aid to attend, you are encouraged to apply as early as possible.
