The MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics is the oldest and largest fellowship program in clinical ethics. Since 1981, our fellows have received outstanding multidisciplinary clinical ethics training.

We now offer multiple fellowship opportunities and pathways for physicians, nurses, ethicists, attorneys, philosophers, chaplains, and other scholars who wish to take advantage of our multidisciplinary approach.

Siegler Fellowship in Clinical Medical Ethics

This executive program is designed for clinicians and academic physicians who are interested in gaining training and experience in medical ethics. The fellowship begins with a four-week, full-time Summer Intensive in July. While most fellows are physicians, we welcome those interested in medical ethics from any perspective, including philosophy, nursing, and the social sciences. There is no fee for the fellowship, and participants in the general part-time fellowship program do not receive a stipend.

ACS-MacLean Center Surgical Ethics Fellowship

The American College of Surgeons (ACS)-MacLean Center Fellowship explores ethical issues that arise in the practice of modern surgery. Sponsored by the MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics and the Department of Surgery, the program is designed for surgical residents, fellows, or attending surgeons from outside the University of Chicago who are interested in gaining training and experience in surgical ethics.

Full-time Clinical Ethics Fellowship

The full-time Clinical Ethics Fellowship training is intended to provide the scholar with an immersive and rigorous experience. Full-time clinical ethics fellows will engage in ongoing mentored clinical ethics research with MacLean Center faculty. They will regularly round in hospital units to facilitate interactions between clinicians and ethics consultants. There is also the possibility of extending the fellowship to a second year. We welcome those interested in clinical medical ethics from any perspective, including medicine, philosophy, nursing, and the social sciences. This program is designed for those hoping to make clinical ethics a major focus of their professional lives. The fellows receive a salary and benefits commensurate with University of Chicago fellowship standards.

Hospitalist-Scholars Clinical Medical Ethics Program

The University of Chicago (UC) Hospitalist Scholars program helps future academic hospitalists and other internal medicine doctors obtain the skills and experience necessary for successful scholarly careers in research, education, or clinical leadership. The program includes four established pathways: Outcomes Research Pathway, Medical Education Pathway, Clinical Medical Ethics and Bioethics Pathway, and Global Health Pathway. Hospitalist Scholars in all pathways typically participate in the program for two years, during which they devote at least three quarters of their time to coursework and to a mentored project.
