Marguerite Fellowship Program for research in France

The Marguerite Program provides opportunities for UChicago Ph.D. students to spend one-month in Paris conducting research under the mentorship of one of the 46 tenured Collège de France faculty members while making use of Collège de France laboratories, facilities, and/or archives to advance their doctoral research.

Up to three (3) fellowships will be awarded this application cycle.

Funding Levels

Each Marguerite Fellow will receive: 1) a $2,500 travel grant from UChicago, as well as 2) a stipend of up to €1,200 from the Collège de France. The travel grant will be disbursed prior to departure. The amount of the stipend, to be disbursed at the end of the fellowship residency, will be based on actual living expenses occurred and will be paid out at levels consistent with supporting documentation (receipts) submitted.

Fellowship Tenure

UChicago Marguerite Fellows are expected to spend at least thirty (30) days in Residency at the Collège de France (in Paris) either between March 1, 2025, and July 14, 2025, or between September 1, 2025, and December 15, 2025.

Eligibility

This opportunity is open to full-time students enrolled in a Ph.D. program in any UChicago graduate division or professional school.

Selection Criteria

• Quality of applicant’s academic record
• Timeliness, importance, relevance of the proposed research project
• Complementarity between the applicant’s research project and the expertise of the proposed Collège de France mentor and/or the research facilities at the host institution
• Candidates’ levels of maturity, autonomy, flexibility, and other qualities that help ensure a successful research stay abroad in a setting with minimal student support structures.
• While some proficiency in the French language is helpful, non-French-speaking applicants will be considered as well.

Program Administration and Funding

This research fellowship program is managed and administered by the France Chicago Center and the Collège de France and made possible through the generous financial support of UChicago Global, the Hugot Foundation of the Collège de France, and the France Chicago Center.

* This fellowship honors Marguerite de Navarre (1492-1549), the elder sister of the King Francis I, the king who founded the Collège de France in 1530. She was an author, a patron of the humanities and the arts, a staunch supporter of the new ideas of her time, and an exemplary figure of the French Renaissance who befriended and protected many artists and writers —including François Rabelais and Pierre de Ronsard. In recognition of her contributions, the largest lecture hall at the Collège de France bears her name.
