A catalyst for scholarship on modernism across media, disciplines, and geographies, the Leonard A. Lauder Research Center for Modern Art’s mission is to foster the understanding and appreciation of modern art, including Cubism, its origins and influence. Fellowships with the Research Center offer an exceptional opportunity to conduct focused research on an independent project while contributing to the life of the Research Center. Applications are encouraged from those pursuing research in art history and in other humanities disciplines like history, anthropology, philosophy, and comparative literature, as long as they are focused on the visual arts.

Long-Term Fellowships

Each year, the Research Center offers four fellowships relevant to graduate students:

  • a two-year Pre-Doctoral Fellowship;
  • a Post-Doctoral Fellowship, which may be one or two years in duration;
  • and, a one-year Non-Residential Doctoral Dissertation Completion Fellowship.

Pre-Doctoral Fellowships (two years) are aimed at current PhD students working on their thesis. Post-Doctoral Fellowships (one or two years), for those within seven years of receiving their doctoral degree, are intended for scholars working on a book project. The one-year Non-Residential Doctoral Dissertation Completion Fellowship is for PhD students in the final stages of writing and aiming to submit their thesis at the end of the year.

Stipend:

  • $50,000 for Pre-Doctoral fellows
  • $60,000 for Post-Doctoral fellows
  • $30,000 and the option for a two-week visit to the Research Center for Non-Residential fellows

During the fellowship period and at the Museum’s discretion, Leonard A. Lauder Fellows receive a travel stipend of $6,000.

Publication Grants

Grants are for book-length manuscripts, peer-reviewed edited volumes or, in exceptional cases, peer-reviewed journal articles. Grants are open to authors worldwide, normally for English language publications (exceptionally other languages may be supported). The grants do not support exhibition catalogues. Author subventions demanded by publishers and incorporated in budgets are not eligible costs.

The Center will award up to six grants per annum, typically between $4,000 and $7,000, with no single grant more than $12,000 to be awarded. There are two application rounds per year with deadlines of September 30 and March 31.
