The Kennan Institute offers Short-Term Grants (up to one month’s duration) to U.S. citizens whose research in the social sciences or humanities focuses on the former Soviet Union and who demonstrate a particular need to utilize the library, archival, and other specialized resources of the Washington, D.C. area. The Kennan Institute accepts applications involving policy-relevant research on Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, the Caucasus, Central Asia, and cross-border projects involving the Baltic States.

Short-Term Grants provide a stipend of $3,500 for one month. The Kennan Institute cannot provide office space for Short-Term scholars, but a carrel with a computer and internet access is provided. Two rounds of competitive selection for Short-Term Grants are held each year, with closing dates on March 1 and September 30. Applicants are notified of the competition results roughly seven weeks after the closing date.
